Laminate is a synthetic flooring comprised of multiple layers of high density fiberboard (HDF) fused with special resins. HDF is a mix of wood waste products (wood shavings, sawdust, etc.) that are ground together. A photographic image of natural hardwood is then bonded to the HDF layers, and topped with a water-resistant coating. This is a popular flooring option for both commercial and residential use, holds up well in high-traffic areas, and is much more durable and scratch- and stain-resistant than natural hardwood floors. Laminate flooring is also less expensive to install than natural hardwood, so it’s a great way to get the look of a hardwood floor without the high cost. The downside? Its smooth surface can be slippery, especially when wet. To reduce the risk of a slip or fall, we recommend an anti slip treatment for laminate floors.
